Lo Capelo del Douol - The Chapel of Cadamarans

I am starting on this major project, kindly agreed by the Mayor of Le Nayrac, ( on behalf of the Commune du Nayrac ) where I have offered to paint murals in their small chapel, just a short distance from here. It is the chapel built in dedication of the "femme du blanche," daughter of the Lord of Estaing and her young lover. I have already produced an album of music I play in situ - echoing down this gorge, also dedicated to this sad but romantic tale of her demise.

Cadamarans : one of the seven hermitages of the Diocese of the parish of St Michel (repaired in 1297). Cadamarans or Carmarans is a dependant of the parish of Nayrac. The Chapel was a ruin before 1730; the Chapel is an oratorium of the archaic type (flat east wall) close to the road and four kms from Estaing. The chapel was given to the commune of Le Nayrac, by Louis Galtier a notaire in Estaing, during the fifties. The name of Carmarans could originate from the latin: "Cadaver marrans", literally "the mourning corpse", giving credence to the following legend.

Legend of Aveyron.
Lou PouonTrinquat and Lo Capelo del Douol.

After a short distance on leaving Estaing and travelling towards Entragues, on the same riverside, you will find the remains of an old wall built on schist rock. These hardly visible remains correspond with those which are visible on the opposite of the river and which are similar. One may recognise these remains in the country under the patois name of "Lou Pouon Trinquat" which translates into "the broken Bridge".
This remaining rock suggests that the bridge had one very high arch for the water to run under. There were smaller arches each side for flood water to run under when the river was high, but there is no longer any trace of these.
On the left bank, in the cracks of the rock where water has deposited soil, there grows the small periwinkle, the flower symbolizing the memory of this story.
By continuing your walk down the valley or Gorge you pass through slopes covered with vines and chestnut groves until you arrive at the village of Carmarans. Just after the village and continuing to Entraygues you will come to a small chapel. This is its' history.

"The Lord of Estaing was very friendly with the Lord of Vallon, who lived in the valley of the River Truyere nearby. The Lord of Vallon was widowed and had a young son. Having to go to war this lord entrusted his son and servant to his friend the Lord of Estaing. This Lord of Estaing had a daughter a little younger. The two children played and grew together until they become adolescent and felt a deep attraction for one another.
However the Lord of Estaing had plans to marry his daughter to a powerful lord of the vicinity, the Baron de Thenieres, a hard man and violent one.
The girl, happy in the company of young Lord de Vallon, had wishes to the contrary and no wish to marry the Baron de Thenieres
The Baron de Thenieres understood that the girl he desired was already in love with the young boy. He requested that the Lord of Estaing send the boy back to his home in Vallon.
The youngsters made a tryst to always remain faithful and be together again.
On the arranged day and hour a light was to be placed in top of the large tower, this would indicate that there was no danger for any untoward plans the Baron may have!.
An indescrete and corrupt maidservant of the girl was to inform the Baron de Thenieres in this way.
Knowing the day and the hour to which the young page was to come, the Lord of Thenieres paid six good-for-nothings who, in the darkness of night, to cut down the arch of the bridge which connected Estaing to left bank.
At the appointed time the young man arrived at "La Rouquette", on the left bank, not far from Estaing. In the night he did not see the abyss which opened in place of the missing bridge arch, he fell in and drowned!
His servant, not seeing him return, went the following day and searched. He saw the damage to the bridge and understood the possibility that the boy had fallen in and alerted the Lord of Estaing and all the population.
They searched along the river for the body of the young man. They found it opposite Montaigut. With a small boat, which they call in the region a "nego fouol" they succeeded in bringing back the body.
During this time an investigation did not have any doubt that the author of the crime was the Baron de Thenieres.
At the request of the girl, the lord of Estaing buried the young man at the place the corpse had been found along the Lot, and let built on top of the tomb, a chapel and beside a lodge to house a hermit , whose mission would be pray for the defunct and the two families of Estaing and of Vallon

This Chapel was then named, Lo Capelo del Douol, the Vault of Mourning. The young girl, in her unhappiness, did not delay long in following her companion to the tomb!
On the anniversary of the death of the two lovers, the fishermen of Estaing say they have seen a light rise in cloud above the large tower of the castle, and little by little take the shape of a woman in long white clothing, joining hands with the sky. They say that they have, distinctly, heard her call three times - Douol! … Douol! … Douol! … and then all disappears.

When many times asked on the date of this apparition, the fishermen stated invariably: "It is with the rise of the white fish, occuring when the corn flowers".

Rosie and I plastering the areas to paint, with a white first coat, and then blending a surrounding coat coloured by local ochres from Roussillon -

I suspect that the original colouring of the plaster was done using these local ochres - I have tried to blend the new paintings and plasterwork in with the ancient. Then painted the panels with a white primer and cream borders ready for the mediaeval patterns.

La Lady of the Lake

The hopes within the fears, the tears, your father saw them all,
Paternal arms enfolding, holding fragile petals nurtured.
Blossoming virgin beauty of fresh youth,
Protecting in his palms the fruit he ripened and matured.
Running, dancing foal of spring, revelled in your joy of life,
Innocent child of sunlit Gaelic fields, summer light so gold.
Hazy lazy days of carefree joy in dreams to be a bride.
He took your sleep and in it placed his dreams,
Natures force entwined your souls in fate's decree embraced.
How he feared yet hoped, strong youth of France on loves' long lance.
Ancient forces, ancient lands tilled by those hands of ages past, time's seeds cast.
As Deaths' dark shadow pouncing fast and in that moment darkness stole his light.
The bright flame shared now lost, as passions fire was quenched now cold as night.
Her soul called out to no reply, her empty dreams grew longer by each day.
As in a trance her mind was fogged by nothing more than memories sweet remorse.
Her sylphlike body so refined, with gentle steps a curtsy now she bowed in winter's
grey.
The candle dim within her spirit's lamp she looked down deep into the water's past,
He beckoned her to come, to join him, dark and cold , embracing to the last.
She sang a song so sweet, so calm, so clear that echoes distant of her fall,
Now carried on for memories past a nightingale repeats her call.
